HAPPY NEW YEAR! It's hard to believe that it's really 2014. 2013 was a phenomenal year. I had a good amount of new experiences, started new journeys in my life, met new people, and most importantly, I got to take a lot of photos. While I do not believe in making New Year's Resolutions (and I don't fault anyone that does), there are a few photography goals that I hope to accomplish this year. If any of these apply to you, let's help each other out.
Taking more diverse photos. | This may sound like a vague goal, but I have a habit of taking photos of the same types of events over and over. This year I really want to step outside of my comfort zone and do something different. While I'm not sure of what that entails, I definitely do not think it would hurt to try something new this time around.
Starting/continuing more photography projects. | The last project I did was a series of photos about breast cancer awareness. It was really well-received. I like to take pictures of things that resonate with people on a personal level. This year, I would like to do at least 5 photography projects. One project in particular that I am thinking about continuing is one called "the.essence_", which was a black and white project dedicated to African-American women with natural hair. I need people for these types of things! If you're interested, please get in contact with me.
Shooting more engagement and weddings. | I did my first two engagement photo shoots in 2013. I want to do even more this year! Even though it's challenging at times, I also enjoy taking photos of weddings. There are too many people out there getting married for you not to contact me! If you know of someone that's looking for photos at a reasonable rate, get at me!
Trying my hand at taking photos of newborns. | I've never had the opportunity to take baby photos! I want to change that this year.
Working on my model portfolio. | Model photography is something that I've had very little experience with. I plan making this one of my top priorities in 2014.
Graduation photos! | I haven't gotten to take any graduation photos in about two years. I'm looking forward to helping new graduates document this milestone in their lives.
Shooting more student events at Virginia Tech. | As a Ph.D. student, I typically do not have the luxury of making out to as many events as I would like to. Between writing numerous papers and reading countless journal articles, I'm going to make it a point to get out and cover more events.
Teaching someone about photography. | People often claim that they want me to teach them how to take photos, but no one has ever really followed-up. I would love to teach someone how to take photos. Hopefully I can do that this year.
Writing more about my photography experiences. | You probably noticed that I completely changed the layout of my homepage. I implemented a blog into my website in 2012, but I very rarely used it. I love taking photos just as much as I love writing. Moving forward, you will see a blog post accompanying any new galleries, even if it's just a few words.
If any of these goals apply to you, get in contact with me! With photography, my goal is always to be the best I possibly can. I feel that working toward some of these things will assist me in that regard. Best wishes on the new year and I pray for your own personal successes.
In an attempt to provide visitors of Silas Photography a glimpse into my mind regarding my thoughts and motivations behind photography, I have changed the primary format of my website to that of a blog. Whenever new photos are posted, a blog post will accompany them. Feel free to leave your thoughts on any posts that interest you. Check back periodically for updates.
